And Then Came Summer

First spring went too quickly, and now summer has been a blur!
June meant the start of summer school, where I taught Geometry for 5 weeks. Unfortunately, our air conditioner did not do its job for the start of summer, so we were forced out of our house for 10 days while it was repaired (the repairs took 2 days, but it was nearly a week for the replacement part(s) to arrive). Paul's parents were kind enough to take us in for the duration of the a/c incident and thoroughly enjoyed seeing Zane every day for a while.
Our house was appropriately cooled just in time to have family and friends join us for the 4th of July - it's so convenient to be able to see the fireworks from our own backyard! Our neighborhood park has a "splash park" that the kids enjoyed (even Zane), though we were so busy enjoying the water with them that we neglected to get photos. Zane also had his first experience in a swimming pool, and seemed fine with it, though it took a few minutes to get him comfortable with it. We're thinking maybe next summer we'll get in some swim lessons...
Zane continues to explore his world - he has 6 teeth now (4 on top, 2 on bottom) and is beginning to eat table food.
So far, we've added yogurt, banana pieces, quartered grapes, chunked plum, apple slices (these take the longest to "chew", but he loves them!), cheese chunks, Cheerios, cheese puffs, and graham crackers in addition to his regular foods. He still needs help getting some things into his mouth, but his pincer grasp is developing quickly. We've introduced him to a sippy cup, but he spends as much time banging it on the table/floor/chair as he does drinking from it. He can get a full spoon of food into his mouth, but is infrequently interested in feeding himself with a spoon.
He still rolls over both directions, and loves sitting up, but shows no real inclination to crawl. If he wants to see or have something behind him, he uses his legs to turn around on his bottom, which is cute. He LOVES to stand up! He can pull himself up as long as his feet are in the right place for a good base and he can get a good hold on something to pull up on. He thinks standing between the couch and ottoman is so cool since he doesn't need us to help him stand there. We've even held his hands while he takes a few steps. We still work on tummy time and trying to encourage crawling, but I wonder if he'll skip it completely.
We all suffered through a stomach virus Zane caught at daycare and shared with both myself and Paul. While the virus itself was short lived for Zane and I (about 1 day), Paul suffered for most of 3 days and it took Zane nearly 2 weeks to regain his appetite. Thankfully, we're all healthy once again.
I have a few sessions of staff development remaining this summer, and then I can begin setting up my classroom at the new high school. After 2 years of not having my own room, I'm excited to have a "home" at work again and looking forward to the school year.
Paul has decided to pursue teacher certification through and alternate certification program. He's studying 4th - 8th grade ELA, Math, Science, and Social Studies for a Generalist certificate as well as an 8-12 Social Studies certificate. His first test is at the end of August. We're hopeful this will turn into a great career move for him and our family. In the interim, he will be working as a Special Education Aide this fall at a middle school in Grapevine. The pay isn't great, but he will be working and making connections in the area where he hopes to begin a new career. We're excited about the opportunities it will bring him.
And so August is upon us...where did the summer go?
